After all that editing for Quiet on the Set, I am so glad to be writing again! I’m still working on the story I began just before Camp Nano and work on in April, but I’ve also got a really long list of other projects to begin.
If you were to look at my writing calendar (conveniently located to the sidebar on your left), you’d see almost nothing but writing the rest of the year. I hope to finish my current WIP by the end of this month (we’ll see how that goes) so I can jump into something new for July’s Camp Nano. I plan on continuing with it for a couple months after that, which hopefully will be enough time to finish it.
From there, I only expect a month of time for another project (or maybe a break?), if that, before Nano starts in November. Then it’s madness for a month, and in December, I haven’t decided if I want to take a break or do a little writing project for Christmas…
What about that screenplay I wanted to work on this year? Or the three other project ideas waiting in the wings? They’ll just have to wait. Not to mention the editing I want to do on last year’s stories.
While it might look like I’ve mapped out the rest of the year exclusively for writing, I don’t expect to spend the rest of the year writing. It’s a cyclical process, writing, and editing, and I think at some point, I’ll cycle back into the editing in between July and November Nano, though that will have to play out on its own, because I still haven’t figured out which story I want to go back to work on.
Progress?
Remember how I said I wanted to finish my WIP by July? (It was four paragraphs ago!) With only 18 days left, it’s not going to be easy. At about 26,000 words, I’d say I just got through all the exposition, and I’m about to get into all the big catalysts and action in the story, which means I’m going to have to transition into “narrator” mode more effectively.
These people are in a dangerous situation, and talking is probably only going to slow them down, so I really need to downshift the dialogue and get into the nitty gritty of what’s actually happening around them to tell the story. This does not come naturally for me, so it’s going to be a really tough 18 days.
Even if I don’t finish, I’d like to come close. I’ll feel comfortable starting a new story in July if I’m at least REALLY close to having finished the last one. Maybe I can work on the new story and wrap up the current one in July…
Wishful thinking, perhaps, but you have to wish it first to be able to do it later.
