The first week is over, but, I am kicking some serious novel-writing butt so far!
I was so afraid that I wasn’t going to be able to find time this year with everything else I had going on, that I think I overcompensated. It did help that Thursday night’s TV line-up was limited to just 2 shows that I regularly watch and weekends are always slow in that department, but even so, I am way ahead of where I thought I’d be! (Election night slowed me down just a bit–I had book club and Comedy Central election coverage to watch!)
Day 7 and I’m over 15,000 words. In other words, about 2,300 words ahead of schedule. I am trying to build up a good buffer now while I have the time to do so. That way, if my schedule picks up too much in the coming weeks, it won’t be too much trouble if I miss a day or two of noveling, or if a few days are slower than others.
So far, I’ve probably logged between 2 and 6 hours of writing a day to get that far. Granted, some of that is interrupted time and includes meals and a little Netflix, but it’s been enough to get me this far on top of trying to manage a new social media campaign, my current social media freelancing, and my book marketing. I haven’t actually gotten started on my Nano writing today, but I intend to have at least another 3-5 hours for it by the time the clock strikes twelve!
Surprisingly, my story isn’t progressing too quickly through the outline, either. One of the hazards of having an outline is that it’s really easy to jump to all the main plot points in the outline without filling in the gaps in between, but so far, I have hardly jumped ahead at all. Jumping to the next big scene can result in getting through your story in half as many words as it could or should have taken.
Bonus: The new book is also coming along nicely! I was a little nervous because it’s my first semi-futuristic alien/outer space type of science fiction story, but I am thanking my lucky stars for having access to such wonderful sources of inspiration: namely The X Files, Firefly, and, surprisingly, Numb3rs. Getting some good description, good back and forth among the characters, and some fun new words and places! I am still in the expository stage, though, so I’m still working my way toward the rising action.
In other words, it’s not time to celebrate just yet. I’ve still got 35 thousand words to go, and I probably could stand to do some more work on my outline before I get too much further. It probably only covers another 2 or 3 chapters, and maybe another 10 or 15 thousand words. Either way, the last thing I want is to get stuck when I’m halfway through!
A lot of the big time-consuming tasks and projects that were on my schedule are out of the way now, but there’s still a long way to go to get to 50 thousand words!
Good luck to you other Wrimos out there!
